William Kamkwamba is a Malawian inventor, author, and activist, born on August 5, 1987, in Malawi. Growing up on his family farm in Wimbe, he was educated at Wimbe Primary School before being forced to drop out in his freshman year due to financial constraints. Undeterred, Kamkwamba turned to self-study, borrowing books from a community library, including an American textbook that sparked his passion for renewable energy. He then built a wind turbine from scavenged materials, powering his family's home and earning international recognition. Kamkwamba's ingenuity has also led to projects such as clean water systems, malaria prevention, and solar power installations, including a deep water well with a solar-powered pump and a drip irrigation system. In 2008, he became one of the inaugural students at the African Leadership Academy in South Africa.
