Vaddey Ratner is a Cambodian American novelist and survivor of the Khmer Rouge genocide and war refugee. As a critically-acclaimed author, her works have been translated into twenty languages. Ratner's debut autobiographical novel, In the Shadow of the Banyan, became a New York Times bestseller and was a finalist for both the 2013 PEN/Hemingway Award and the 2013 Indies Choice Book of the Year. The novel was also selected for the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read program from 2015-2016. Her subsequent novel, Music of the Ghosts, earned the distinction of being a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice and was longlisted for the 2018 Aspen Words Literary Prize.
