Tan Twan Eng is a Malaysian-born writer known for his poignant and thought-provoking novels. Born in Penang, he spent his childhood in various locations throughout Malaysia. After studying law at the University of London, he embarked on a career as a lawyer in a respected Kuala Lumpur law firm. His literary pursuits have garnered international recognition, including a stint as International Writer-in-Residence at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore in 2016. Tan's notable works include his debut novel <em>The Gift of Rain</em> (2007), which was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize and translated into several languages, and <em>The Garden of Evening Mists</em> (2011), which won the Man Asian Literary Prize and Walter Scott Prize, and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.
