Susanna Clarke Books in Order
Susanna Clarke is a British novelist born in 1959 in Nottingham. Her nomadic childhood was spent in towns across Northern England and Scotland. Clarke was educated at St Hilda's College, Oxford, and has had a diverse career in non-fiction publishing, working at Gordon Fraser and Quarto. In the early 1990s, Clarke taught English abroad, first in Turin to Fiat executives and then in Bilbao. Returning to England in 1992, she settled in County Durham, overlooking the North Sea, where she began crafting her debut novel, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. From 1993 to 2003, Clarke worked as an editor at Simon and Schuster's Cambridge office, focusing on their cookery list. Her short stories, such as "The Duke of Wellington Misplaces His Horse" and "Mr Simonelli or The Fairy Widower," have been published in US anthologies, with the latter earning a World Fantasy Award shortlisting in 2001. Clarke lives in Cambridge with her partner, the novelist and reviewer Colin Greenland.
