He graduated from Brighton Polytechnic in 1991 with a degree in humanities, solidifying his passion for crime fiction writing. Kernick's early years were marked by a string of rejections, but he persevered, joining MMT Computing in London and later Metaskil plc in Aldermaston, where he gained valuable sales experience. His persistence paid off in 2001 with the publication of The Business of Dying, followed by the best-selling thriller Relentless, which topped the UK charts in 2007 after being recommended on Richard & Judy's Summer book club.
