A native of Chicago's south side, Siegel attended New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois, before moving on to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he studied accounting. He later earned a Juris Doctor from Boalt Hall at the University of California, Berkeley in 1983, and has spent over two decades practicing corporate and securities law with Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP in San Francisco.
