She grew up on a farm in Hampshire and was educated at Sherborne School for Girls, before reading Spanish and Italian at Exeter University. In 1998, she converted to Judaism, marrying historian Simon Sebag Montefiore in the Liberal Jewish Synagogue in London. They reside in London with their two children, Lily and Sasha.
