Rick Bass is a renowned author, environmentalist, and advocate for wilderness preservation. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, he grew up in Houston as the son of a geologist and later studied petroleum geology at Utah State University. His writing career began as a petroleum geologist in Jackson, Mississippi, where he penned short stories during lunch breaks. In 1987, he relocated to Montana's remote Yaak Valley with his wife, artist Elizabeth Hughes Bass, becoming an active environmentalist to protect his adopted home from human encroachment. Bass serves on the boards of the Yaak Valley Forest Council and Round River Conservation Studies. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the PEN/Nelson Algren Award, James Jones Fellowship Award, and O. Henry Award. His notable novels include "Where the Sea Used to Be" and "The Hermit's Story," and his short stories have been featured in The Best American Short Stories.
