As the youngest of four children, he was raised in a family that valued education and tradition, with his father serving as a prison governor. He graduated from New College, Oxford in 1983 with an English degree. Gale's writing career has spanned decades, with his first two novels, The Aerodynamics of Pork and Ease, published in June 1986.
