M.J. Hyland is a critically acclaimed author born in London to Irish parents. She spent her early childhood in Dublin before moving to Australia to study English and law at the University of Melbourne. After completing her studies, Hyland worked as a lawyer for several years before transitioning to a successful writing career. Her debut novel, How the Light Gets In (2003), garnered significant attention, being shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, the Age Book of the Year, and the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Award, where it took third place. It also won the Best Young Australian Novelist Award. Her subsequent novel, Carry Me Down (2006), won the Encore Prize and the Hawthornden Prize, and was shortlisted for the prestigious Man Booker Prize.
