Michael Ondaatje Books in Order

Michael Ondaatje is a celebrated Canadian novelist, poet, and memoirist of Sri Lankan descent. Born to a Burgher family of Dutch-Tamil-Sinhalese-Portuguese origin, he relocated to England with his mother in 1954 and later settled in Canada in 1962, becoming a Canadian citizen. Ondaatje studied at esteemed institutions, including the University of Toronto and Queen's University, where he earned his BA and MA, respectively. As a respected educator, he taught English Literature at York University and Glendon College from 1971 to 1988. Alongside his wife, novelist Linda Spalding, he co-edits Brick, A Literary Journal. Ondaatje's diverse works include novels, memoirs, poetry, and film, showcasing his boundless creativity. He has been a vital supporter of independent publishing through his role as poetry editor at Toronto's Coach House Books. His accolades include being named an Officer of the Order of Canada (OC) in 1988 and a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1990. His novel, adapted into an Academy-Award-winning film, secured the Man Booker Prize in 1992.
