As editor-in-chief of Orange Coast magazine from 2007 to 2016 and a former senior editor of the Los Angeles Times Magazine, he demonstrates an expertise in crafting compelling narratives. Smith has written several novels, including the Edgar Award-nominated "Straw Men" and "The Disappeared Girl," which was published by Diversion Books in 2014. Additionally, he has penned nonfiction books with co-author Patrick J. Kiger, such as "Oops: 20 Life Lessons from the Fiascoes That Shaped America" and "Poplorica: A Popular History of the Fads, Mavericks, Inventions and Lore That Shaped Modern America."
