Kim van Alkemade is a celebrated author and professor. Born in New York City, she grew up in suburban New Jersey, surrounded by her family's diverse cultural heritage. Her father, an immigrant from the Netherlands, and her mother, a descendant of Eastern European Jewish immigrants, met in the iconic Empire State Building. Van Alkemade earned a doctorate in English from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and currently teaches writing at Shippensburg University.
