Julia Alvarez Books in Order

Julia Alvarez is a celebrated American author of Dominican descent, who left her native Dominican Republic at ten years old in 1960. Her prolific body of work includes six novels, three nonfiction books, three collections of poetry, and eleven children's and young adult books. Alvarez has spent years mentoring writers, teaching in schools and communities, and serving as a writer-in-residence at Middlebury College until her retirement in 2016. Her remarkable contributions to literature have earned her esteemed recognitions, including the Latina Leader Award in Literature, the Hispanic Heritage Award in Literature, and the Woman of the Year by Latina magazine. Alvarez's works, such as the bestselling novel "In the Time of the Butterflies," have been nationally celebrated through programs like the Big Read, and she received the National Medal of Arts from President Obama in 2013.
