Born in Preston Crowmarsh, near Wallingford in Oxfordshire, Brunner's writing career began at a young age, with his first novel, Galactic Storm, penned at 17 under the pen-name Gill Hunt. After serving as an officer in the Royal Air Force from 1953 to 1955, Brunner married Marjorie Rosamond Sauer in 1958 and began writing full-time. He is credited with coining the term "worm" and predicting the emergence of computer viruses in his 1975 novel The Shockwave Rider. Brunner's notable works, including Stand on Zanzibar, The Jagged Orbit, and The Sheep Look Up, have been recognized for their unique storytelling style and prophetic themes, solidifying his position as a pioneering figure in science fiction.
