Jhumpa Lahiri is a celebrated American author of Indian descent, known for her poignant and insightful portrayals of the Indian-American experience. Born in London and raised in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Lahiri's early life was deeply influenced by her mother's desire to preserve their Bengali heritage. Lahiri's academic pursuits led her to earn multiple degrees from Boston University, including an M.A. in English, an M.A. in Creative Writing, an M.A. in Comparative Literature, and a Ph.D. in Renaissance Studies. She has also held a fellowship at Provincetown's Fine Arts Work Center. As a respected author, Lahiri's works frequently explore the lives of Indian-Americans, particularly Bengalis. Her notable short story collection, <i>Interpreter of Maladies</i>, garnered critical acclaim, earning her the PEN/Hemingway Award, The New Yorker's Best Debut of the Year, and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2000. Lahiri has also been a dedicated educator, teaching creative writing at Boston University and the Rhode Island School of Design. Currently, she serves as a Vice President of the PEN American Center.
