She pursued a double major in psychology and English literature at Lake Forest College, where her passion for writing blossomed during a formative experience working in a bookstore through a work exchange program. As she began her writing career, Carey worked at the art center of a local college, eventually transitioning to a full-time writing career after a decade of dedication. Her perseverance paid off in 2001 with the publication of her debut work, marking the beginning of a successful literary journey. Currently, Carey resides in western Michigan, where she is an active member of the oldest Mardi Gras krewe in the state.
