Ian Whates Books in Order
Ian Whates resides in a Cambridgeshire village with his partner Helen and their pets, including Honey, a golden cocker spaniel, Calvin, a tailless black cat, and Inky, a goldfish. His earliest memories of science fiction are rooted in childhood fascination with Dr. Who, Lost in Space, and Star Trek, which culminated in a defining moment upon hearing a radio adaptation of John Wyndham's The Chrysalids. This sparked a lifelong passion for science fiction, driving him to devour the local library's SF section. Whates' creative expression often defied conventions, as evident in his school days, when he wrote an SF murder mystery in response to an essay title unrelated to science fiction. His writing career began in the late 1980s with short stories in small press magazines, including Dream and New Moon Quarterly. After an extensive research period, during which he immersed himself in science fiction and fantasy, Whates rekindled his writing pursuits in the early 2000s, joining the Northampton SF Writers Group in 2004.
