Hammond Innes is a renowned English novelist celebrated for his meticulous attention to detail in crafting vivid descriptions of places. As a prolific writer, he has penned over 30 novels, as well as children's and travel books. His notable achievements include being awarded a C.B.E. (Commander, Order of the British Empire) in 1978 and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Bouchercon XXIV awards in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1993. Born in Horsham, Sussex, Innes was educated at Cranbrook School in Kent before embarking on a career in journalism with the Financial Times. His debut novel, The Doppelganger, was published in 1937. During World War II, Innes served in the Royal Artillery, rising to the rank of Major, and published several books, including Wreckers Must Breathe and The Trojan Horse. After the war, he dedicated himself to writing, achieving numerous early successes. His novels often feature meticulous descriptions of places, such as in Air Bridge, which was set partially at RAF Gatow and RAF Wunstorf during the Berlin Airlift. Innes continued to produce books in a regular sequence, alternating between six months of travel and research and six months of writing.
