Gladys Maude Winifred Mitchell is a renowned British author, born in 1901 in Cowley, Oxford. She is the daughter of market gardener James Mitchell and his wife Annie. Mitchell's educational background includes attending Rothschild School, Brentford and Green School, Isleworth, followed by stints at Goldsmiths College and University College, London from 1919-1921. As a dedicated educator, she taught English, history, and games at St Paul's School, Brentford from 1921-26, and at St Anne's Senior Girls School, Ealing until 1939. Mitchell also holds an external diploma in European history from University College, earned in 1926, marking the beginning of her writing career. Throughout her life, she taught at several schools, including Brentford Senior Girls School and the Matthew Arnold School, Staines, before retiring to Corfe Mullen, Dorset in 1961. As a prolific author, Mitchell is celebrated for her mystery novels, particularly the works featuring her iconic detective, Mrs. Bradley, who appeared in 66 novels.
