Ernest J. Gaines is a renowned novelist, short story writer, and educator. Born to a sharecropping family, he began picking cotton in the fields by age nine and attended school sporadically, with only five or six months of education per year. At fifteen, he moved to California to join his mother and stepfather, as his Louisiana parish lacked a high school for African Americans. In California, he discovered his passion for writing. Gaines attended San Francisco State University, served in the military, and secured a prestigious writing fellowship to Stanford University. He has received numerous accolades, including being a MacArthur Foundation fellow, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and a recipient of the National Humanities Medal, the National Medal of Arts, and the French Order of Arts and Letters as a Chevalier.
