Dudley Pope is a renowned naval historian and novelist, celebrated for his meticulous research and engaging storytelling. Born in Ashford, Kent, Pope's early life was marked by adventure and hardship. He joined the Home Guard at 14 and the Merchant Navy as a cadet at 16, only to be torpedoed and left adrift in a lifeboat at 17. Forester, Pope turned to fiction, producing the acclaimed "Ramage" series, which comprises 18 novels. A lifelong sailor, Pope lived on various boats, including the Golden Dragon and Ramage, which served as his writing studio until 1985.
