Dennis L. McKiernan is a prolific author of fantasy and science fiction novels. Born in Moberly, Missouri, McKiernan spent his formative years in the Midwest before serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Following his military service, he pursued higher education, obtaining a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri in 1958 and an M.S. in the same field from Duke University in 1964. McKiernan embarked on a successful engineering career at AT&T, working at Western Electric and Bell Laboratories from 1958 until his early retirement in 1989. He then transitioned to a full-time writing career. McKiernan is best known for his epic fantasy series, which began with a bold attempt to create a sequel to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.
