Brian Moore is a renowned Canadian novelist born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to a devoutly Catholic family. His father, a surgeon and lecturer, and mother, a nurse, instilled in him a strong work ethic and a keen sense of storytelling. Moore's early writing career flourished in Canada, where he worked for the Montreal Gazette, married his first wife, and penned potboilers under various pen names. His breakthrough novel, The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne (1955), was initially rejected by a dozen publishers before being published under his own name. This marked the beginning of a prolific writing career, producing nineteen novels across various genres and styles, including The Luck of Ginger Coffey, An Answer from Limbo, Black Robe, and The Statement. Moore's notable works have earned him numerous accolades, including three Booker Prize short-listings for Lies of Silence, The Colour of Blood, and The Magician's Wife, as well as the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for The Great Victorian Collection.
