Brian Jacques, a celebrated author of children's fiction, was born in Liverpool, England on June 15th, 1939, with ancestral roots in Ireland's County Cork. Growing up in the Liverpool docks area, Jacques attended St. John's School, an inner-city institution with a rooftop playground. At ten years old, his exceptional writing talent was first recognized when he penned a short story about an animal, defying his teacher's skepticism. This early encounter sparked his passion for writing, and Jacques soon discovered his gift. As a truck driver delivering milk to the Royal Wavertree School for the Blind in Liverpool, Jacques wrote Redwall, a vivid tale that captivated his young audience. He remained a devoted patron of the school until his passing. Jacques' sons, Marc and David, continue to reside in Liverpool, with David's stunning murals adorning numerous institutions, including children's hospitals and sports stadiums.
