Bernard Cornwell is a renowned English author born in London in 1944 to a Canadian airman father and an English mother who served in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. Adopted by the Wiggins family, a strict Protestant sect known as the Peculiar People, Cornwell was raised in Essex, where he was schooled in a disciplined environment that forbade frivolity and even medicine. He later attended Monkton Combe School and the University of London, graduating to become a teacher. Cornwell's subsequent careers include stints as a BBC journalist, editor of Thames News, and a writer, which he turned to after relocating to the United States in 1980 to be with his American wife. Influenced by C.S. Forester's naval adventures, Cornwell created the Richard Sharpe series, following the protagonist's involvement in major battles of the Peninsular War.
