Arthur Koestler is a celebrated writer, known for his diverse output of essays, novels, and autobiographies. Born into a Hungarian Jewish family in Budapest, Koestler's early education took place in Austria. He began his career in journalism before joining the Communist Party of Germany in 1931, a decision he would later renounce in 1938. His groundbreaking novel, Darkness at Noon, published in 1940, catapulted him to international recognition with its powerful anti-Communist theme. Over the next four decades, Koestler championed various causes, penned novels and biographies, and penned numerous essays. His contributions to European culture earned him the Sonning Prize in 1968, and he was appointed Commander of the British Empire in 1972. Despite health complications, including Parkinson's disease and leukaemia, Koestler continued to produce significant work until his passing in 1983.
