Anne McCaffrey is a renowned science fiction author born on April 1st, 1926, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her parents, George Herbert McCaffrey and Anne Dorothy McElroy McCaffrey, instilled in her a sense of adventure and intellectual curiosity. A highly educated individual, Anne attended Stuart Hall in Staunton, Virginia, Montclair High School in New Jersey, and graduated cum laude from Radcliffe College, majoring in Slavonic Languages and Literatures. Before devoting herself to writing full-time, Anne worked at Liberty Music Shops and Helena Rubinstein from 1947 to 1952. With three children, Alec, Todd, and Georgeanne, she found the time to pursue her passion for storytelling. Her breakthrough came with the publication of Restoree in 1967, a novel that challenged the unrealistic portrayals of women in science fiction. However, it is her iconic series, The Ship Who Sang and the Dragonriders of Pern, that showcase her mastery of world-building and storytelling, cementing her status as a science fiction legend.
